The Dagger: Where should Ben Simmons go?
Watching a disgruntled player trying to force a trade out of an organization is exhausting.
Waiting for the either side – the player and the organization – to budge is like watching paint dry.
It’s understandable. Moving players is a convoluted process but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating waiting for it all to unfold.
Until it does, sports pundits and writers alike will pontificate, speculate and any other -ate suffixed verb that involves hypothesizing about where the player will end up after the insufferable wait for both sides to agree on the destination.
Right now, the NBA world is in hell’s waiting room, twiddling their thumbs as the Philadelphia 76ers and Ben Simmons sort out what is developing to be a nasty divorce.
I, too, am there. It’s hot and I’m frustrated.
Thus, time to postulate.
Here are three teams Ben Simmons should join.
Toronto Raptors
The 2019 NBA Champs have finally whittled away its veterans and former cornerstone players to be left with a youthful roster that doesn’t make sense and lacks star power.
Inject Ben Simmons. He’d make them more bearable to watch and would fit nicely alongside new cornerstones Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet.
Offer up anyone – aside from those two aforementioned guys – to land him and the East could have a new Big 3. The Raptors will return to defensive formidability and have a guy that can get the ball to one of its many offensive weapons which include Goran Dragic, Gary Trent Jr. and OG Anunoby.
Cleveland Cavaliers
I mean really – what do the Cavs have to lose?
The real question, however, is what do they have to offer?
An aging, injury-prone Kevin Love? The overhyped Tacko Fall?
You don’t give up Collin Sexton, who is the lone bright spot for the Cavs right now.
The names Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, Lauri Markkanen and rookie Evan Mobley are also positives for Cleveland. But they’re not off the table to get Simmons.
Yes, Sexton would have the ball in his hands less with Simmons around. But maybe that’ll be the change the Cavs need to start winning more.
Besides, Sexton is more of a two.
San Antonio Spurs
Want another organization with a confusing roster and seemingly no direction? Look no further than the Spurs.
San Antonio is a championship organization with arguably the best coach in the league in Gregg Popovich – a combination that could change the trajectory of Simmons’ career that seems to be careening toward great role player instead of superstar thanks to his unwillingness to shoot the ball.
I’d expect Popovich and the Spurs to resolve Simmons’ shooting woes and return to the playoffs after missing the postseason for the first time in 22 years last season.
The Spurs are starving for a star. The question will be if Simmons can take the pressure of being the face of a franchise because with the Spurs he would unquestionably be.
Philadelphia pressured Simmons and here we all are – sitting in a hot room speculating landing spots as we wait for a pissing match to end amicably.
